Honour their service by supporting families like Rebecca's

The impact of military service reaches far beyond the courageous soldiers on the frontline. Her then husband Andrew’s return from Afghanistan in 2012 was marked by the lasting effects of PTSD, reshaping their family’s life.

I was young and naive when it came to understanding the war... I had never heard the words post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which became an acronym I nearly used daily.”

Rebecca’s story exemplifies the profound challenges faced by families of veterans. A single mother to three boys—Jordan (15), Mason (11), and Henry (5)—Rebecca balances raising her children, working at a local school, and pursuing a university degree in primary education.

Legacy stepped in when Rebecca needed it most, providing financial assistance for school uniforms, childcare fees, and extracurricular activities, giving her children opportunities to grow and thrive. Today, Rebecca is pursuing a degree in primary school education. Legacy has assisted her with grants for university and a laptop for her studies.

“Because of Legacy, I’ve been able to attend university with a little less stress, knowing that someone believes in me and is invested in my success.”

A Major Change to Legacy

After careful reflection and in direct response to the recent Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, Legacy has broadened its eligibility so more families can access support when they need it most.

Families of veterans who have given their health through service are now eligible without the requirement of operational deployment.

Supporting more families means greater demand across services. Currently, Legacy cares for over 28,000 vulnerable people across Australia.

But we can’t do it alone.

With your help this Anzac Day:

  • Families and widow/ers can stay connected during times of isolation.
  • Children can discover belonging through camps and programs.
  • Parents and carers can find guidance when life feels overwhelming.

Your generosity makes this possible.

Honouring the Promise

In the trenches of the Western Front during World War 1, a soldier said to his dying mate: "I'll look after the missus and kids".

That simple act of mateship became known as The Promise and it has guided us ever since.

Your donation this Anzac Day will help us ensure we can uphold this duty of care; honouring those who have served our country by supporting their families.

We must do more this Anzac Day and with your support, we can.

The Promise continues with you.
